Grapevine Vintage Railroad History

The story begins in the late 1800s, when the Cotton Belt Route first laid tracks through town. Farmers used the line to send cotton, produce and livestock to markets across Texas and the world, and Grapevine soon became a bustling stop along the way for passenger trains as well.

Though passenger service eventually faded with the rise of highways and cars, the magic of the rails never truly disappeared. With beautifully restored century-old coaches and authentic locomotives, Grapevine Vintage Railroad welcomed its first passengers in the 1990s and has been delighting riders ever since.

Today, you can experience train travel the way it used to be: wooden seats, brass accents and the steady rhythm of the tracks beneath your feet.

Plan Your Excursion

The railroad operates nearly year-round, offering 46 weeks of excursions each year. In January and early February, the trains pause briefly for annual inspections and maintenance. Beginning in March, weekend rides whisk you away every Saturday and Sunday through Spring. Summer brings even more opportunities. There are departures on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout June, July and August. From kid-approved, family-friendly rides to special themed events designed just for adults, there’s an excursion for every kind of traveler. For the most up-to-date excursion schedule, check the website before planning your ride.

Santa’s North Pole Express®

As the year draws to an end, the team prepares the railroad for the biggest, most cherished event of the year - Santa’s North Pole Express®. This beloved tradition is a must-see part of Grapevine’s Christmas Capital of Texas®. Train excursions are offered most days, starting the day after Thanksgiving, and you can enjoy festive rides through December 30, celebrating the jolliest time of the year! Because this event is so popular, tickets often sell out quickly. So be sure to purchase yours in advance to secure your spot.

Meet The Trains

Each family-friendly excursion is powered by true vintage legends, including one that has been chugging along the rails for 126 years! There’s an 1896 steam locomotive named Puffy (currently under restoration), a 1953 GP-7 diesel known as Vinny and a pair of classic 1957 FL9 EMD locomotives. Whichever locomotive leads the way, every journey brings history to life as the tracks carry you into a timeless Texas experience.
